Despite the denials from Liverpool, Lille’s president Gerard Lopez has confirmed that the Reds are in talks to sign Nicolas Pepe this summer, in an exclusive interview with RMC Sport this evening.
“I know there have been discussions with the player, not us as a club”, Lopez stated.
“Liverpool has players in those positions, and I read that maybe there are players who will leave, or not, I’m not particularly focused on Liverpool.
“But it is true that there have been discussions with agents.
“We had two offers before the AFCON. The agents, with who we have good relations, have asked us a little time to look at other options.”
Lopez also surprisingly claimed that Bayern Munich made an offer to sign Pepe back in January; similarly to PSG though, there has been no interest from them thus far in signing the Ivorian this summer.
In spite of the absurd €90m valuation Lille apparently put on Pepe’s head, Lopez claimed the price could be from anywhere from €40m to €80m for any sides keen on acquiring Pepe’s services.
While the 24-year-old is currently prioritising the AFCON, he’s keen to sort out his future as soon as he returns from the tournament.
With 23 goals and 12 assists for Les Douges last season, Pepe could prove to be just the additional firepower Liverpool need in attack to compete again next campaign.
