Sadio Mane has admitted he would be willing to swap his Champions League triumph with Liverpool for one thing — victory with Senegal in the African Cup of Nations this summer, in an interview with France Football via The Mirror today.
“It is up to us to achieve something great”, Mane stated.
“Of course we are one of the favourites, we cannot hide from that. But this standing is not enough to go all the way.
“Winning with my country, which has never won the African Cup of Nations, that would be magnificent.
“I am even ready to swap a Champions League to win an African Cup of Nations.
“The return to Dakar would be extraordinary. This is my biggest and most crazy dream.”
While Liverpool fans may be aggrieved that Mane is seemingly confirming that he’d prioritise international glory over success with the Reds, it is easy to understand why. With Senegal looking to win a first international tournament, Mane could be lauded as a hero in Senegal should he captain them to become champions of their continent.
Senegal are one of the favourites for the tournament, winning their first game 2-0 against Tanzania despite Mane’s suspension; the winger will return to face Algeria on Thursday night and should be raring to go.
One thing’s for certain though: this doesn’t put Mane’s commitment to Liverpool in any doubt whatsoever and it would be fantastic to see him win the AFCON this summer.
