Departing Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno has agreed a deal to join Villarreal as soon as his deal at Anfield expires officially on July 1st, according to Spanish publication Marca via Inside Futbol today.
Moreno wasn’t offered a new contract to stay at Liverpool having only played a bit-part role for the past year, and it was decided that a move away to secure more regular game time would be beneficial for both parties.
The 26-year-old maintained a preference to return to his homeland, and his representatives have been in talks with Villarreal for the past few weeks, with a deal now seemingly complete.
Moreno only managed to make 5 appearances for Liverpool last season, struggling to overtake the well-established Andrew Robertson in the left-back pecking order, although still leaves the club a Champions League winner.
Moreno has endured a difficult career on Merseyside since arriving from Sevilla for £12m back in 2014, often criticised for his rash defending and positioning errors.
However, the Spaniard always remained a popular figure in the dressing room with his infectious charm and personality, and hopefully a move back to Spain gets his career back on track.
