Any hopes Liverpool fans still had about signing Nabil Fekir in the summer appear to be over with the news that he is set to sign a contract extension with Lyon, according to club president Jean-Michael Aulas via a report from The Mirror yesterday.
“We have made some advances in Fekir’s contract extension.”, said Aulas.
“We are discussing it and soon I’ll have to see Nabil, we aren’t in the final stages but in any case we have advanced.”
This will come as a huge blow to any Liverpool fans that were still desperate for Fekir to come to Anfield after a £53m deal collapsed in the summer due to fears over the long-term durability of his right knee.
A deal for Fekir was thought to be so far in advance that not only was a medical carried out, but the Frenchman did an interview for LFCTV and decided on a shirt number.
The Lyon captain has continued his fine form this season with 11 goals in all competitions and it’s easy to comprehend why Liverpool fans were so disappointed when a move failed to materialise.
However, with Fekir close to signing a new deal that will keep him in France for the foreseeable future, it’s almost a certainty to say we won’t see him lining up for Liverpool anytime soon.
