Having been marred by financial issues for the past few years, Sporting chiefs have decided that this summer is the ideal time to cash in on Fernandes, with both Merseyside clubs ready to swoop.
Although the Portuguese international is contracted to Sporting until 2023 and is thought to have an €100m release clause imbedded in his contract, Sporting would be open to selling the midfielder for far less to ease their growing financial concerns.
Despite Sporting’s somewhat lacklustre campaign so far, Fernandes has been in a rich vein of form, scoring 21 goals and notching 11 assists in all competitions already this season.
With plenty of Europe’s top clubs likely to be sniffing around Fernandes, whose departure from the Estádio José Alvalade now looks inevitable, Liverpool are set to be right in the race to obtain his signature.
