Liverpool are set to join the battle for PSV winger Steven Bergwijn after his tremendous season in the Eredivisie, according to a report from The Sunday Express via The Daily Star this morning.
The Reds will face stiff competition for the signature of the Dutch international, with Manchester United, Inter and Bayern also thought to be interested in acquiring his services.
It is United who are currently thought to be leading the race, having sent out scouts to watch Bergwijn during PSV’s 2-2 draw with FC Emmen a week ago.
The 21-year-old has garnered a lot of attention from Europe’s elite for his displays this season, where he has already managed to rack up 10 goals and 9 assists in all competitions for Mark Van Bommel’s side.
Spanish publication Sport claimed in October that Bergwijn currently has a release clause of around £18m inserted in his contract at PSV, which expires in 2022, with this price coming as a bargain to whoever can secure his signing.
Quick, skilful and with a rapidly improving potency in front of goal, Bergwijn would mark a smart signing for Liverpool and with the versatility to operate naturally on both the left and right wing, he would make the ideal back-up for Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.
