Not many could blame Jurgen Klopp for running onto the pitch after Divock Origi’s last-gasp winner in the Merseyside Derby yesterday evening, but heading onto the pitch and embracing Alisson while the game was ongoing could have potentially landed him in hot water.
The FA are unlikely to go easy on Klopp; although a touchline ban remains a possibility, the likelihood is he will face a hefty fine for his actions in the game.
The incident draws parallels with a similar one involving Jose Mourinho in 2014, who sprinted down the touchline onto the field of play after a very late winner for Chelsea against PSG in the Champions League. UEFA ultimately decided not to take action against Mourinho and it looks likely the same will happen with Klopp.
Even if Klopp does get a brief touchline ban for running onto the pitch, it’s hard to imagine he’ll be too bothered — with the high emotional intensity of the winner, he would probably have done the exact same thing if he could go back.
The celebrations — both during and post match — are bound to go down in Merseyside Derby folklore.
