Liverpool have officially made contact with the representatives of Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar before possibly moving for the Frenchman in January, according to a report from football outlet TheWistle last night.
Aouar, who was described as ‘incredible’ by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola following his side’s 2-2 draw with Lyon last month, is seen by Klopp as the perfect midfielder to add to his ranks when the title race intensifies this season, and he has decided to make contact with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas over a potential transfer.
Any deal is bound to be complicated — not only are Aouar’s services also desired by the likes of Juventus, Manchester City and Chelsea, Aulas is a notoriously difficult negotiator — something Liverpool know all too well after the failed transfer of Nabil Fekir in the summer.
Lyon are thought to be unwilling to let the 20-year-old depart midway the Groupama Stadium midway through the season as well and are hoping to tie Aouar down to a new long-term deal in the near future.
An all-round midfielder in a similar vein to Naby Keita, Aouar has provided 5 goals in Ligue 1 this season, along with 3 assists in Europe, while his defensive attributes are also not to be sniffed at, with 5 tackles in the game against Man City exhibiting his class.
The Frenchman will be difficult to prise away from Lyon, who will be set on further developing the midfield of Aouar and Tanguy Ndombele, but considering his talent and potential, he’d be a sensational signing for Liverpool.
