Despite previous outlets stating that Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic was keen to join up with former boss Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in the summer, a new report today from the Bristol Post says that Pulisic now intends to stay at Dortmund for the foreseeable future — thus damaging any hopes Liverpool had of bringing the 20-year-old to Anfield.
This is a very bizarre twist in the saga as merely a few days prior, Dortmund chiefs were begrudgingly open to allowing Pulisic his dream transfer to the Premier League in the summer but now it appears as if the young winger has opted to stay at the Westfalenstadion past the end of the season.
Klopp is known to be a longstanding admirer of the star, even having an £11m bid for his services rejected in his first summer transfer window at Liverpool back in 2016.
Any hopes of completing a deal were set to be complicated, with Chelsea (and per recent reports Manchester United) also keen on signing the winger, although it was always thought that Pulisic preferred to link up with Klopp, who he has previously described as being “a great guy”.
You can understand Pulisic’s apparent change of heart — beloved by fans at Dortmund where he is a regular starter, he may believe it to be too much of a challenge to displace one of Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah from the starting XI.
Yet with pace in abundance, great with the ball at his feet and already highly marketable for FSG as the face of the USA national team, Pulisic would be a smart signing by Klopp.
