Liverpool are apparently set to move for Marco Asensio in the summer, despite reportedly having a club record £160m bid rejected by Real Madrid in the summer, according to Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda via The Mirror.
Liverpool would have supposedly made the offer for Asensio after a deal for Lyon’s Nabil Fekir fell through but interest was rebuffed from president Florentino Perez as Madrid were unwilling to sell any other star names after Cristiano Ronaldo’s sale to Juventus.
“This year, an offer of €180m came from Liverpool to Real Madrid for Asensio”, Inda stated.
“The club said no because Cristiano left, but Klopp is in love with the player and will go for the player next summer”.
Although he’s endured a difficult season thus far at the Bernabeu, seemingly struggling to deal with the additional pressure of replacing Ronaldo, the potential is clearly there and he would be a shrewd replacement for Coutinho.
At only 22-years-old and already a regular for both Madrid and Spain, you can understand why Asensio is such a sought after target for Klopp and any deal would mark a real statement of intent.
