Liverpool have been handed a big blow in their attempt to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Iker Muniain, with the news that the Spaniard is set to renew his deal with Bilbao, according to Spanish publication Marca, via SportWitness.
Previous reports had stated that Muniain was guaranteed to leave the San Mamés Stadium upon the expiry of his contract with the club, which is set to run out in June and that Liverpool had made an offer for his services.
However, this was apparently untrue and now the 25-year-old plans to reject interest from the Reds and Napoli to stay at Bilbao — a stark contrast from the claims of last week.
Muniain is still said to be aware of other club’s wishes to sign him and there is a slim possibility that Klopp made an indirect offer for the star, as opposed to initiating talks with the player.
With pace in abundance and great with the ball at his feet, Muniain would have been a highly smart signing by Klopp — especially if he was able to obtain his services for free.
However, having been with the club since the age of 12, it seems as if Muniain is getting cold feet about a move away and extending his stay now seems much more probable.
