The 2018/19 Premier League campaign has been good for Liverpool so far. Joint top of the league after only 8 games and all whilst never really getting out of 2nd gear – not to forget remaining unbeaten whilst having more clean sheets and conceding less goals than this time last year.

But, who is Liverpool fans’ player of the season up to now?….Salah? Firmino? Mane?

We raised the question as a discussion point over at @anfieldedition to see what your thought’s were and to be honest, the result will not be a surprise to you.

Virgil Van Djik, Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker all led the way at the top with too many mentions to count, and rightly so.

Alisson has been a revelation since his move from Roma in the summer. The Brazilan goalkeeper has helped us be a rock at the back this season.

After the Reds’ opening 8 games last season Liverpool conceded 12 goals, compared to a measly 3 goals conceded this season. Furthermore, Klopp’s side have managed to keep 5 clean sheets – the joint most in the Premier League alongside Alisson’s Brazilian compatriot Ederson. What an impact!

That’s not to take anything away from the impact Van Djik has had on our defence and more recently the form of Gomez. The newly formed partnership may have shocked some fans at first but now we are truly seeing just how much the pair have complimented eachother so far this campaign.

Klopp hinted at the importance of a solid defence during pre-season claiming:

Klopp: “Offence wins you games, defence wins you titles.”

Other notable mentions from Liverpool fans were the ever reliable James Milner, bargain of last season Andy Robertson and Gini Wijnaldum – all of which really stepped up to the plate last season and have carried over their form into the new season.

Verdict: our player of the season after 8 games goes to Virgil van Dijk. The guy has transformed our defensive woes and has been solid so far. Gomez gets an honourable mention.
