During 2017, young Polish international Piotr Zielinski was the topic of discussion when it came to transfer news for all Reds’ fans around the world. Klopp’s side were constantly linked with the midfielder during the 2016/2017 season.
Zielinski was on loan at Empoli from Udinese and shone during his loan period. Ultimately his proposed move to Liverpool failed to materialize and the Polish international ended up joining Serie A giants, Napoli.
Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi, recently spoke to Radio Kiss Kiss and mentioned how close Zielenski was to signing for Liverpool:
Fabrizio Corsi: “When he came to Naples, he had that option, but they did really well to convince him. I have a few regrets regarding him. He was decisive for us, but I didn’t ask for a ransom. I was working with Udinese’s interests in mind, who then had an agreement with Naples. It’s hard to deal with Giampaolo Pozzo [owner of Udinese]. For me, he’s the best.”
Zielinski had previously revealed that he had met Klopp before his move to Anfield collapsed.
Zielinski: “My head was a mess. Liverpool finally got a plane and I met with Jurgen Klopp. He said he wanted me in his team. I saw a different world and after returning my head was an even bigger mess. I knew that Liverpool wanted me badly and I knew they would return to the talks as I got that promise in January. It didn’t work out for them with Udinese at the end.”
As mentioned by Zielinski, both Liverpool and Udinese could not settle on a fee for the midfielder. Klopp moved on quickly from the disappointment and snapped up Georgino Wijnaldum from Newcastle during that summer window.
