Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on leaving Manchester United and returning to Real Madrid to replace struggling boss Julen Lopeteugi but on one condition — Xabi Alonso joins him as his assistant.
According to editor of OK Diario, Eduardo Inda, he stated in an interview that “his intention [Mourinho], today, is that Xabi Alonso is his assistant. That is the idea that Mourinho has in his head.”
Mourinho worked closely with Alonso during his first stint as Real manager from 2010-2013 and is keen to reunite with the ex-Liverpool man, who retired from the game last year and currently manages the U14 side at Real.
Mourinho is under pressure at Old Trafford, with his side sitting at 10th in the Premier League, although there are conflicting reports regarding his future, with some publications stating he is waiting for the boot from United bosses while others say he is happy to see out the remainder of his contract.
With Lopeteugi set to be axed following Real’s shocking 2-1 home loss to Levante on Saturday, Mourinho is said to be Florentino Perez’s preferred option, but he is willing to turn to former Chelsea man Antonio Conte if Mou is unattainable.
Alonso, who played for Liverpool from 2004-2009, remains highly revered on Merseyside and is remembered fondly for his role in the heroic comeback in Istanbul to win the Reds’ 5th European cup.
Fans would certainly be disappointed if Alonso decided to join Mourinho, but there is no denying it would be a big step at the beginning of a fairly new managerial career.
However, he has previously stated he “has dreamt of one day managing Liverpool”, and fans would love nothing more to see a reunion between him and Steven Gerrard at Anfield — this time in the dugout instead of on the pitch.
