Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has opened up about Emre Can’s summer departure revealing how he knew the midfielder would be leaving for months.
The German international rejected Liverpool’s offer of a new contract before joining Serie A champions, Juventus on a free transfer this summer.
Klopp insists he had “no problem” with Emre Can’s decision to quit the Reds’ for the Italian giants but has revealed certain regrets.
“We always had and still have a good relationship,” Klopp revealed to the Liverpool Echo. In the end Klopp believed the lure of playing and living in Italy was key to Can’s decision to end his 4-year stay with the Merseyside club.
Klopp highlighted his desire not to lose out on getting money for the 24-year old German.
“The only problem I had for the club was that I wanted to get some money. ‘Sign a new contract and then we’ll sell you!’ But that wasn’t really realistic.”
After admitting to knowing Can wanted to go, Klopp has backed his decision to keep picking the player throughout Liverpool’s campaign.
“I knew Emre would give everything. He was desperate to play in the last few games.”
Reds’ fans may have initially been slightly unhappy with the German’s departure, but the signings of Keita and Fabinho have made that unhappiness extremely short lived.
