Jurgen Klopp will prioritise signing a creative midfielder in the summer transfer window to replace Philippe Coutinho.
Klopp is keen to add more depth to his midfield next season after injury problems have left the Reds’ boss thread bare in the middle of the park.
When Coutinho left in January, Klopp intended to use the return of Lallana as his replacement until the summer.
However, Klopp never anticipated the injury lay-off he has had so far this season – managing just one start in the Premier League.
To make matters worse, Emre Can has missed the majority of the back-end of the season with the Champions League final a potential return date for the German.
Plus, Oxlade-Chamberlain was dealt an injury blow a couple of weeks ago against Man City, keeping him out for the season.
Quite frankly, Klopp cannot rely on his midfielders remaining unscathed next season; especially as Henderson usually picks up the odd injury lay-off here and there too.
James Maddison is of strong interest and it is a deal that we understand is likely to happen. A deal is close to being agreed.
Other midfield targets come in the form of Napoli’s Jorginho and Wolves’ Ruben Neves. According to a report, Neves has already held negotiations to join Liverpool next season.
With Emre Can’s departure nearly certain, Klopp is even more convinced that he needs midfield reinforcements ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
“We will probably sign a couple more players because that’s how it is. We have to strengthen first of all the squad,” said Klopp.
“To bring in players who are 200 per cent better than the players we already have will be quite difficult but we will still need to do a few things to have more depth in the squad.”
“You can never get rid of all injury risk but as long as we could rotate that would be all fine. The boys still did brilliantly but of course we will still sign players.”
“It is always important to bring in the right players. That is what we work for during the whole year. We will be prepared but it is always difficult.”
“We are only looking for really good players. And the players we will be bringing in we will be 100 per cent convinced about them altogether.”
Jurgen Klopp likes to complete Liverpool’s transfer business quite early and rather swiftly. You can expect the same this summer.
