If you ever needed an explanation for Joe Gomez’s sudden drop in form and sharpness then here it is.
It has been revealed that the English defender was playing through a bad ankle injury that forced him to play in pain for the Stoke game in particular, and is now deemed no longer able to continue. Joe Gomez will go for immediate surgery to prevent the injury worsening further and will of course miss the Champions League final and world cup campaign for England, if he ever had a chance of making the squad.
Luckily for Liverpool the return of Nathaniel Clyne coincides Gomez’s absence, however Clyne himself is recovering from a chronic back injury after having surgery also, and is no doubt lacking in the sharpness that Gomez was criticised for not having recently himself.
Liverpool’s two right back options are now Trent Alexander Arnold and Nathaniel Clyne for the remaining league game against Brighton needed to secure top four, and the Champions League final in Kiev.
