Liverpool have enquired about the availability of Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen this summer, according to reports in Spain.
The Spanish newspaper, El Mundo Deportivo, are reporting that Liverpool, amongst other top European clubs; Atletico Madrid and Napoli, are interested in the 28-year old.
Since arriving from Ajax during the summer of 2016, for a reported fee of €15 million, the Dutch international has been limited to cup competitions, while playing second fiddle to Marc-André ter Stegen for league games.
This season, Cillessen has played in all of Barcelona’s Cope del Rey fixtures on the way to the final, conceding only two goals. The Spanish side will play against Sevilla in the final, which is on Saturday.
Albeit the lack of games for the goalkeeper, he has manged to hold down the No. 1 spot for the Netherlands. And recently impressed in an International friendly vs. Portugal, where his side ran out 3-0 winners.
Several key saves kept his clean sheet intact, and his performance was good enough to be named man-of-the-match by WhoScored.com. Fellow compatriot and Liverpool centre-half Virgil van Dijk scored his countries’ third, and final, goal on the night.
With the recent issues Liverpool have had with their goalkeepers, they are likely to be linked to a plethora of talent at the position. None more so, than Roma ‘keeper Allison. With the Brazilian being three years younger than Cillessen, and playing regular games at a high level, he is likely to cost significantly more.
Jurgen Klopp and his staff will get an up-close and personal look at Allison, when Liverpool go up against the Italian side in the Champions League Semi-Final.
In Cillessen’s current contract, which runs till 2021, the Barcelona player is said to have a release clause of €60 million.
However, there is general uncertainty whether Liverpool should spend that type of money, after the form that Loris Karius has shown since the turn of the year. After knocking Simon Mignolet off the top spot, Karius has looked to make that spot firmly his own.
The German has kept 8 clean sheets in his last 12 games. Of course, there are a number of factors that come into question with that statistic including the addition of Virgil van Dijk. But, when called upon, Karius has been reliable making a number of outstanding saves, while additionally taking control of his penalty box.
With Mignolet’s current position on the bench, it is understood that he set to leave at the end of the season, meaning there will be an open spot.
The fees for Cillessen, and Allison, would be too much, if the club were only looking for a back-up for Karius. Money that could be spent on other needs for the team.
