It’s Summer 2014 and Brendan Rodgers splashes out £20 million on a 20 year old winger for the future supposedly labelled as one of Europe’s great young prospects. One thing was clear from the start – Markovic was a rough diamond, an unrefined talent not yet ready for first team action. Fast forward two and a half years and a truly unspectacular loan spell has reached its conclusion.
Markovic spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce, unable to make any real impression and failing to secure a regular first team place. Once again this season Markovic sees himself relegated to bench duty at Portuguese outfit Sporting Clube de Portugal despite what seemed like a perfect fit for Markovic to re-establish himself as a regular starter and regain his reputation as a hot prospect. The reality has been quite contrary.
News has recently surfaced that Sporting are set to end Markovic’s loan spell early with the 22 year old returning to Liverpool. Targeted by his own fans in Portugal and unsuited to Jurgen Klopp’s high intensity game, it’s hard to see him settling down this season. Turning 23 in just weeks, Markovic’s career is reaching crunch-time with the player’s label of ‘young promise’ soon turning to ‘underperforming talent’.
With Liverpool down to bare bones in the wide areas Markovic must have surely believed that this would be his final chance at the club, however Klopp has decided that Markovic shall not return to training with the squad at Melwood and the player will be offloaded imminently.
Update – Markovic has joined Hull city on loan till the end of the season
