The temperament of the Liverpool side has been questioned many times this season. It seemed to be representative to lose against weaker opponents for a side lacking mental strength. But the way the Reds reacted to Milner’s red card against Palace showed the complete opposite. It was the performance of a 22-year-old which impressed most. It was the man who slowly turns into Liverpool’s best midfielder despite all the doubts. And his name is Emre Can.
There have been times last year where fans were very frustrated with Can’s performances. They were fuming about Can taking the wrong options or slowing things down. Can often struggled badly, was sloppy on the ball and weak in the tackle. Similar to the whole of Liverpool, the German International has struggled for consistency but since Klopp’s appointment Can has gained a lot of confidence. He has become one of the first names on the team sheet and Klopp’s started to play him in his strongest position; defensive midfield.
Can started to show why Jürgen Klopp has been right to show such faith in him. After Milner’s sending off against Crystal Palace, Can truly turned up and showed his leader mentality. Playing in a deeper role, he was able to keep the possession while using his physique to retain possession. Can won all of his tackles in London, and won 75% of his aerial duels. He completed many interceptions and blocked the ball quite often. You can see why Jürgen is reluctant to move him from the heart of the team. Emre Can is turning into a perfect all-round central midfielder.
He plays very calm and is certainly what you need when things go wrong on the pitch. His maturity and self-belief continues to grow each game, which influence his behaviour on the pitch. The young German always plays with his head held high trying to drive the game. Most players’ confidence takes a hit after a mistake but he always looks unshaken. He never hides. Even though he takes too many touches rather than move the ball quickly, his latest displays as well as his passion and leadership have enhanced Emre Can’s prestige. He is becoming one of our most crucial players and one of Klopp’s favourites.
Liverpool have been criticised for lacking character and winning mentality, but the German proves these claims wrong. Can is years from the peak but started to lead the team. Jordan Henderson may be Liverpool’s captain, but there was only one midfielder who led the team on Sunday. While Henderson appears to be struggling with his heel injury, Can keeps improving and an increasing amount of people see him as the next Liverpool captain.

It’s almost certain that Can will be a major star in Liverpool. He has the physical capabilities, the skill and the mentality to be a top midfielder for many years to come. And some already see him becoming a world-class player.
