Liverpool over the years have had many outstanding central midfielders ranging from Graeme Souness, Jan Molby, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso and most recently Steven Gerrard. Players of the very highest quality. Liverpool now have on their books in that position on the field, Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Emre Can, they have recently purchased Marko Grujic, and he will be at the club next season.
Grujic and Can have plenty of potential and promise, but as yet are not the finished articles, however after watching Liverpool play on Saturday there could well be another player who could be added to the first team group, and get his fair share of games.
Cameron Brannagan is only 19 years of age, but in the few glimpses I have seen of the player, he has maturity in his game for a man beyond his years, is very comfortable on the ball and has a good range in his passing.
On Saturday Brannagan’s set pieces were excellent, in my opinion, they were the best set piece delivery Liverpool have had all season, since Gerrard left, the quality of set pieces has dropped off dramatically but not on Saturday.
Brannagan linked the play up well and also got forward on occasions to support the strikers. Kevin Stewart also played well on Saturday in a holding role, however his skill set looks pretty limited where I think Brannagan has far more range in his footballing ability.
Appreciate it is only one game, but from what I have seen I liked a lot, and if he continues progressing and working with the coaching staff, Liverpool may well have unearthed a big talent in Cameron Brannagan.
